Pancreatic neoplasm: a new Humanitas protocol presented at the IMFAD Congress. Awarded to Dr. Auriemma

The Radiotherapy and Oncology Units, together with the Digestive Endoscopy and Gastroenterology Unit of the Humanitas Cancer Center, have developed and promoted a multidisciplinary phase II study protocol in patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer. The study, coordinated by Professor Marta Scorsetti, provides treatment with high-dose stereotactic radiotherapy fractioned in a small number of sessions, after a first line of chemotherapy in cases where the disease remains inoperable, without progression.

FISMAD study presented at the congress

At the national congress of the Italian Federation of Digestive System Diseases Societies (FISMAD), held in Rome, was presented the abstract entitled “Eus-guided placement of new golden fiducial markers in stereotacticbody radiation therapy in locally advancedpancreatic cancer: preliminary results of feasibility and safety”.
The presentation summed up the preliminary results of the ecoendoscopic positioning of gold markers for stereotactic radiotherapy in patients enrolled in protocol.

The procedures, performed by Dr. Silvia Carrara, require the use of a new model of needle with preloaded fiduciali that reduces the time of execution and any infectious risk associated with the procedure. The aim is to facilitate and make more precise the centring of the neoplasm during the radiotherapy treatment, allowing the use of high dosages, as required by the innovative study protocol.

Recognition of Dr. Francesco Auriemma

The Scientific Committee of the 25th National Congress of Digestive Diseases awarded Dr. Francesco Auriemma, who presented the results of the work, with the recognition of the best contribution of the “Pancreas Oncology” session, and confirmed that the multidisciplinary approach of our Cancer Center is an instrument of high scientific and clinical value for patients and doctors.
