International Accreditation

For Humanitas a strict link between efficient management and high quality clinical activity is mandatory. Consistently, Humanitas was the first polyclinic in Italy, and among the few in Europe, to have been polyclinic certified by the Joint Commission International. This acknowledgement of excellence has been confirmed and renewed five times since 2002 and has required the compliance with over 1,300 standards.

Putting quality at the center at Humanitas means striving for excellence and comparison with internationally recognized accreditations and certifications that set the best standards for quality and safety of care. That is why we are proud of our accreditations and certifications.

At Humanitas, quality of care and patient safety are the focus of our activities. That is why we have chosen to be accredited with Joint Commission International, which places patient safety and quality of care at the center of all hospital pathways and processes.

Accreditation with Joint Commission International is the most important worldwide, the most rigorous in terms of method, and helps us compare ourselves with the best hospitals around the world.

In Italy out of more than 1,400 hospitals, only 17 hospitals have achieved this important recognition. Humanitas has been accredited since 2002, and in June 2015 we obtained the gold seal for the fifth consecutive time.

Every three years, at least five evaluators from the United States come to Humanitas for a week and check adherence with more than 300 standards. Unlike many certifications that merely verify procedures, the uniqueness of the JCI approach is that verifications are conducted “in the field,” observing patient pathways and the actual behaviors of professionals.

JCI accreditation involves the whole hospital and its leadership, in the day-to-day concreteness of work in the service of the patient.

Eusoma certification identifies Humanitas as a center of excellence for breast cancer treatment. This is a confirmation of the work done to create a Breast Unit where women with breast cancer are cared for by highly specialized professionals. Eusoma certification identifies facilities of excellence through the verification of quantity and quality criteria, for the application of precise guidelines to the clinical pathway-from prevention to treatment in advanced stages.

In 2016 Humanitas obtained accreditation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center with OECI. This is a European certification specifically dedicated to continuous quality improvement of activities in cancer centers. OECI requirements are especially focused on the competencies of professionals, organization of activities, ‘adherence to international guidelines, continuous quality improvement, and especially the multidisciplinary approach to the patient.

Implementing and complying with measures to protect the health of its staff is a specific choice of ICH. Therefore, since 2011 Humanitas has obtained OHSAS 18001 certification, on the Management System for Occupational Safety and Health. ICH takes steps to remove the causes of injury or illness and promote the implementation of measures to protect the health and integrity of workers, with special attention to work situations that may pose health risks.

Humanitas was one of the first centers in Europe and to be recognized among the Centers of Excellence (CoE) for the treatment of neuroendocrine tumors by ENETS. The management of such complex diseases requires a strongly multidisciplinary approach, cooperation between centers, integrated treatment pathways, and great attention to quality and research: these are the main aspects on which ENETS recognized Humanitas as a center of excellence.

Humanitas is among the 82 centers nationwide, which have been awarded 3 “Pink Stamps,” the highest award given by O.N.Da, the National Observatory on Women’s Health, to women-friendly hospitals.

Since 2014, the Cellular Therapies team, has obtained JACIE accreditation, the most important in the field of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. This accreditation system certifies the validity of the center that applies for it through a series of standards and parameters that define quality in the care of the patient and the management of the procedures performed. These certifications assure patients of the safety and reproducibility of a complex therapy such as transplantation.

EARL accreditation from the European Society for Research in Nuclear Medicine, certifies the adherence of Humanitas Nuclear Medicine with the most advanced guidelines and standards regarding PET, also allowing participation in international studies for therapy monitoring and patient characterization

In 2017, Humanitas was recognized by the Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) as “EMRAM Stage 6” for the level of evolution and innovation of health information systems. EMRAM (Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model) is an international assessment model that measures, on a scale of 0 to 7, the state of Information Technology (IT) development in healthcare facilities in relation to implementations of Electronic Patient Record and Electronic Health Record.
