The Department of Gastroenterology is headed by Prof. Alessandro Repici. The Department deals with the study, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the organs that make up the digestive system (esophagus, stomach, intestines, colorectum) and diseases affecting the liver, gallbladder, biliary tract and pancreas.
Belonging to the Department of Gastroenterology are:

- the Autonomous Section of Bilio- Operative Endoscopy. Pancreatic
- the Operational Unit of Hepatology
- the Operational Unit of Chronic Inflammatory Intestinal Diseases
- the Operational Unit of Program for the Screening and Genetics of Gastrointestinal Tumors
The diseases most often treated in Gastroenterology are functional and inflammatory diseases of both the upper tract (esophagus and stomach) and the lower tract (intestines and colorectum). These include in particular: celiac disease, gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcers, etc.
Diseases treated in Hepatology include viral and nonviral hepatitis and liver disease associated with alcohol abuse. In particular, the following can be diagnosed and treated: metabolic syndrome, acute or chronic pancreatitis, liver cancer, etc.
