In particular, preventing obesity when children are very young is essential in order to ensure they will have a healthy life once they grow up – explains Dr. Bernardo Marzano, Head of the Bariatric Surgery Unit at Humanitas Gavazzeni Bergamo. – The prevention of childhood obesity, which in Italy currently affects three times more people compared to two decades ago, allows to reduce the risk of future illnesses related to this disease; however, it is necessary to treat obesity on time, otherwise it will be more difficult to eliminate bad habits that can complicate the treatment of obesity-related diseases once children grow up into adults. To prevent children from becoming obese, we can adopt different and more health-conscious lifestyles, which will benefit both them and their parents. For example, families can choose a diet rich in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and olive oil, renouncing to eat meat, dairy products, and packaged desserts on a daily basis. It is also important to get the children used to not having a sedentary lifestyle, encouraging them to practice sports regularly.
