Ischemic attack

Q: I am 50 years old and I have suffered an ischemic attack that has left no visible after-effects. Can I expect more attacks with worse consequences?

A: Unfortunately, you can. In particular, you should keep in mind that  age is a risk factor (fixed) for stroke. In regards to other risk factors, for the most part they are modifiable, however, the risk of having a second episode is reduced once careful examination and control is placed on all the pathologies or lifestyle habits that may play a role on brain ischemia. Specifically, you must carefully monitor your blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels as well as your body weight by undergoing periodic medical examinations (both radiological and neurological). You should also quit smoking if you are a smoker and follow a physical activity (such as brisk walking every day for at least half an hour). Drug therapy is only advised if prescribed by a doctor and should be followed carefully.
