Felbamate is an anticonvulsant. It works by controlling nerve impulses in the brain, thus preventing or reducing certain types of seizures. 

 

How should Felbamate be taken?

Felbamate is typically administered orally in the form of tablets.  In cases where the medication may cause stomach problems, it is recommended to take it with food.

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Felbamate

Felbamate should not be taken in case of blood disorders, bone marrow suppression or liver disorders. It may impair the ability to drive or operate hazardous machinery, especially if taken in combination with alcohol or other drugs. It may also reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives.

 

Before starting treatment with Felbamate, it is important to tell your doctor if:

 

  • You have any allergies to the active substance, its excipients, any other drugs (in particular carbamates) or food
  • You are taking any other medications, herbal remedies or supplements. Mentioning in particular:  gabapentin, carbamazepine, hydantoins, phenobarbital, anticoagulants, valproic acid or hormonal contraceptives
  • You are suffering (or have suffered) from liver problems, kidney problems, mental or mood disorders
  • You are expressing (or have expressed) suicidal thoughts
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding
