In a ‘world premiere’ Humanitas hosted – on 1 and 2 February, in the spaces of the Simulation Center Mario Luzzatto of Humanitas University – the course of Emergency Surgery.

The event dedicated to emergency surgery was organized by the European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ESTES) and the American Association for Trauma Surgery (AAST), at the behest of Dr. Hayato Kurihara, director of the course as well as member of the executive board of ESTES and Head of the Autonomous Section of Emergency Surgery and Trauma in Humanitas.

Goals of the course

The course – which was attended by 30 learners from abroad (mainly experienced and already trained, supported by some residents) – was designed to help surgeons in emergency surgery without trauma by providing the know-how and decision-making skills necessary for daily practice.

“Unfortunately, at international level, the treatment of patients in need of urgent surgery is not optimal, we need to improve the quality of emergency care – explained Dr. Kurihara – the number of patients of this type, who need surgery within a few hours, is very high: for example, there is a much higher number of patients suffering from the most common disease in the world, diabetes, or new cases of cancer each year.

International experts

At the course were invited world-wide speakers, a faculty with the best experts in emergency surgery on the international scene as Raul Coimbra, Andrew B. Peitzman, David Feliciano (USA), Abe Fingerhut, Eric Voiglio (France), Ari Leppaniemi (Finland), Selman Uranues (Austria) and Jonathan Tilsed (UK).

“We have experts of the highest level, who have chosen to come for this world launch in Humanitas, which has given the patronage – explained the director of the course -. We are very proud that this first was here in Humanitas. It is such a success that even Swiss and Spanish colleagues, for example, want to organize it in their centers, so we hope to repeat it,” he concluded.

The course

During the event, the participants attended theoretical sessions, case scenarios and state of the art videos with oral presentations, moments of discussion of clinical cases and focused not so much on the practice, which with experienced surgeons is now taken for granted, but on the path to improve the quality of care and decision-making skills that emergency surgeons have to take with speed and efficiency.
