Stiripentol

Stiripentol is used in the treatment of some forms of epilepsy in children. In particular, it is administered in cases where other drugs are not effective in the treatment of severe myoclonic epilepsy in infancy (also known as Dravet's syndrome).

 

What is Stiripentol?

 

Stiripentol is an anticonvulsant. Its exact mechanism of action is not yet understood, but it is known that it leads to an increase in the transmission of nerve impulses dependent neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid.

 

How should Stiripentol be taken?

 

Stiripentol is administered orally.

 

Side effects associated with Stiripentol

 

Among the possible Stiripentol adverse effects are included:

 

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Aggression
  • Anorexia
  • Ataxia (tremor)
  • Drowsiness
  • Excitability

 

It is important to contact a doctor immediately if taking Stiripentol triggers any of the following symptoms:

 

  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Swelling of face, eyes, lips, tongue or throat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Tightness in the chest

 

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Stiripentol

 

The drug is not suitable for neonatal administration.

 

Moreover, before starting treatment, it is important to tell your doctor if:

 

  • You have any allergies to the active substance, its excipients, other medicines, foods, or any other substance
  • You are taking other medications, herbal remedies and supplements, in particular other anticonvulsants, phenobarbital, primidone, phenytoin, carbamazepine, clobazam, and diazepam
  • The child is suffering (or has suffered) diseases and health disorders
