Professor Maurizio Cecconi, Director of the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Therapies in Humanitas, was elected President for the period 2020-2021 of ESICM, the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine.

As Professor Cecconi himself explains: “The European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, together with the American one, is the most important society in the field of critical medicine in the world. It meets in Congress once a year with the presence of about six thousand intensive doctors from all over the world. ESICM also represents a reference beyond Europe, with a strong membership in Asia and Latin America and the organization of congresses and collaborations also in these countries”.

The mission of ESICM

“Research and education are the key words of the mission of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine. ESICM in fact deals with the development of didactic paths and research projects to improve clinical outcomes and therefore the results in patients; it also has a research group dedicated to young intensive doctors to support and accompany their work and training.

We are also working on the definition of standards for intensive care, also thanks to EDIC (European Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine), an exam dedicated to this specialization that aims to establish a standard for practicing the profession in Europe and beyond. We also focus a lot on communication, especially via web, in an educational perspective that is not only linked to the Congress.

We also try to get closer to patients and their families to understand what is important to them in an effort to further humanize intensive care.

Multidisciplinary work is also fundamental: intensive care is increasingly present in hospitals all over the world and it is therefore necessary to work in synergy with other clinical specialties”, underlined Prof. Cecconi.

The Presidency for 2020-2021

Professor Cecconi has been the scientific director of ESICM for two years and has just been elected President for the two-year period 2020-2021, one of the most prestigious positions on the world scene of intensive care; he is the youngest President ever.

“I am very happy and honored and I am proud to bring the Presidency to Humanitas for the first time, and for the second time in Milan after the great Luciano Gattinoni”, concluded the specialist.
