This isnt an article about eating the skins with your fruit and veggies. Its more than that, its about the parts of foods that you never imagined eating and yet can be very healthy for you. Seeds,

Purslane

Purslane is a low sprawling weed that can now be found in most of the temperate world. If you have a garden, its likely that you have some growing in it right now. It’s even more likely that you have pulled parts of it out and trashed it already with other weeds.

Purslane though, not only adds a great flavour and texture to green salads it is also an amazing source of omega-3 fats and melatonin. Melatonin is an important antioxidant that may inhibit cancer.

Eggshells

Yup, eggshells are edible, but don’t just go and drop a whole egg in you pan tomorrow morning, they do require some preparation.

Eggshells are actually packed with calcium. To consume eggshells you have to grind them into powder (its a fairly simple procedure). After that its very easy to slip into your diet.

Eggshell powder process

  1. Wash emptied eggshells under running water
  2. Submerge them into boiling water for 5 minutes (this will kill off bacteria)
  3. Stick into the oven on a baking sheet for 15 more minutes (kills extra bacteria and dries them out
  4. Grind in a grinder
  5. Voila, you have a powder rich in calcium ready to add to your smoothies or beverage.
