Water, there are so many different types of water with so many different flavors: smooth, sparkling, slightly sparkling… but also energized, spiced or colored. Many variants of water are determined by an individual’s own preference. But how can you choose water that is suitable for your body? We spoke with Elizabeth Macorsini, Nutritional biologist who follows the “Outpatient Nutrition and Health at Mater Domini in Humanitas.

We constantly read that proper hydration is essential for the proper functioning of our body. In fact, every day, in moderate climates, we lose an average of 2 to 2.5 liters of water (through urine, sweat, etc.). During warm humid days, it is even more important to replenish fluids lost during the day. However, if for some it is a cinch, others are not used to drinking water and are struggling to recover lost fluids.

Water replenishment can come from:

Flavored waters

On the market, there are different colors and tastes: from yellow-orange to those citrus fragrant, delicate pink to deep red or whose taste and aroma reminiscent of berries. “They are excellent refreshments and rich in vitamins and catechins (plant metabolites, also contribute to slowing the aging of cells). “They are ideal for those who have difficulty drinking water”, says the specialist.

Energy drinks

They are beverages designed to counteract symptoms of fatigue or to give a real boost of vitality, especially for night owls. “It is water enriched with energizing ingredients and I would therefore recommend before drinking them, to visit a cardiologist because some of the  ingredients, such as caffeine, guarana, and taurine, may also cause side effects, ranging from hyperactivity to palpitations, “says nutritionist Macorsini.

Sports drinks

As many know, during exercise you lose a lot of fluids, primarily minerals such as sodium, potassium, chlorine and sugars. Beverages enriched with these substances are therefore excellent for preventing dehydration and above all, restoring proper mineral and sugar levels.

Botanic drinks

These drinks are a kind of cold and refreshing herbal tea that detoxifies the body and are designed to restore inner balance. They are green due to the presence of herbs and spices. It is, in fact, water enhanced with botanical ingredients such as lavender, thyme, mint, ginger, jasmine, ginseng, kumquat, apple juice, pear, lychee, and lemon, to name a few.
