Q: Can I wash my face after having undergone cataract surgery?

A: In regards to personal hygiene, you can bathe or shower the day after your surgery, though it is important to keep your eye closed in order to avoid getting soap or shampoo into it. It is also imperative to avoid putting pressure on the eye with towel drying.

In case of tearing (common in the first few days), it is necessary to use disposable handkerchiefs and never place them in pockets or purses, which can increase the risk of infection. You are allowed to go to the hairdresser a few days after the surgery; however, you should warm them that they should be very careful.

Avoid rubbing the eye exhaustively and always use clean gauze to shield the injured eye.
