Q: What are the foods that can help prevent hypothyroidism?

A: There are foods contraindicated for patients with hypothyroidism. If you are undergoing replacement therapy with L-thyroxine (thyroid hormone), you must be careful to take the tablet on an empty stomach (in the morning, at least  30 minutes before breakfast) and avoid the simultaneous intake of foods rich in fiber and soy. These foods can in fact slow down and decrease the absorption of the hormone at a relatively high extent. It is best to allocate these foods for different hours of the day. All in all, the diet should not differ from that which is consumed by individuals with normal thyroid function.
