Q: Dear Dr. Alloisio, I’m 40 years old and I smoke about half a pack of cigarettes day. I play a lot of sports (running, hiking, cycling) and my question is whether the risks of cigarette smoking are decreased with sports?

A: While playing sports is great, unfortunately, you must quit smoking if you wish to continue being active. There is no evidence to support the fact that playing active sports reduces the risk of cancer or cardiovascular disease in smokers. Sincerely, Mark Alloisio
