Q: How come thyroid dysfunction is much more frequent in women?

A:  Thyroid dysfunction, especially related to autoimmune processes, is more frequent in women because the female population is more prone to increased susceptibility to the development of autoantibodies that target the thyroid gland. In case of nodular disease, the estrogen’s negative activity on reabsorbing iodine in the kidney means that even these conditions are much more frequent in women.
