When the symptoms come sporadically, one does not need to worry or to resort to an emergency medical care. However, it may be useful to communicate the condition to the doctor if it lasts for more than three days. It is advisable to resort to emergency care if the problem is associated with: the presence of blood or mucus and pus in the stools, dark stools, if one has abdominal pain or cramps, high fever, sudden and prolonged blockage of defecation.
