The photopsias , also known as "phosphenes" , represent bright visual sensations , even color, like sparks or flashes of light (such as camera flashes) in the absence of a light stimulus in the external real.

They can indicate the presence of diseases in the retina and / or the vitreous body, the optic pathway or brain, but may also occur in cases of headaches and migraines.

 

What kind of diseases can be associated with photopsias?

The following diseases may be associated with photopsias:

  • Headache
  • Retinal detachment
  • Migraine
  • Retinoblastoma
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Toxoplasmosis

Remember that this is not an exhaustive list and it is highly recommended to consult your doctor, in case of symptom’s persistence.

 

What is the therapy for photopsias?

Since the origin of photopsias may be several causes,  you should consult your doctor, so the base disease can be discovered and deal adequately.

In case of photopsias, it is always best consult withan eye doctor, specialist who will examine the retina and vitreous body and will be able to establish if the presence of photopsias is a sign of eye disease.

In the case of retinal detachment and retinal tears, you will need to resort to surgery and targeted laser treatments. In case of abnormalities of the vitreous body (which can be caused by a reduced hydration), it is often necessary to increase the intake of water and mineral salts.
