Vaginal itching is an unpleasant sensation that signals the presence of an irritation of the tissues of the vagina or vulva. In most cases this disorder is not dangerous, but it is not excluded that at its base there is an infection which requires a specific treatment to counteract deterioration or complications.

Itching may in fact be associated with hormonal changes that cause the thinning and dehydration of the mucous membranes (for example those typical of menopause), or exposure to irritants present in creams, products for intimate hygiene, or even in the garments. Other times, though, can be a sign of a sexually transmitted infection, a bacterial vaginosis or candidiasis.

What is the therapy for vaginal itching?

Often the vaginal itching disappears by itself. Sometimes creams or lotions based steroids that reduce inflammation can be useful.

Vaginosis and sexually transmitted diseases may require the use of antibiotics or pesticides, while yeast infections can be treated with antifungal form of creams, ointments, pessaries for vaginal use or products to be taken orally. The problems associated with menopause can be contrasted with creams, pills or other remedies based on estrogen.

More generally, vaginal itching can be prevented by not using products that contain artificial fragrances (including toilet paper), avoiding the use of soaps and harsh cleaners or overdo the use of douches, preferring cotton underwear and avoid tight pants and synthetic fabrics, always using a condom during sex and, after going to the bathroom, taking care to wipe with movements from front to back.
